AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the discipline of being cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Unlike traditional SEO, where success is measured in clicks to your page, AEO is measured in citation share: how often your brand, content, or expert byline appears as the source the AI engine credits when answering a query in your category. The eight signals weight differently by engine. ChatGPT and Claude favour authored content with named experts and credentials. Perplexity weights third-party citation density (Statista, niche publications, podcasts) heavily. Gemini and AI Overviews privilege schema graph completeness and Wikipedia/Wikidata adjacency. An AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) score is a 0–100 composite of how well your site is structured to be cited by AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. The score in this widget aggregates eight signals: schema graph completeness (Organization + Person + Service + FAQ + Article + Speakable), llms.txt presence + quality, TL;DR + structured Q&A blocks on top commercial pages, original citable statistics, author Person schema with credentials, FAQPage schema deployment, third-party citation density (Wikipedia, Wikidata, niche publications), and active citation tracking. Each signal weighted by its observed leverage on real citation share across our client portfolio.

Which AI engines do you track citations across?+
For full audits we track ChatGPT (with web search), Perplexity, Google Gemini (including AI Overviews), and Anthropic's Claude. We also spot-check Microsoft Copilot, You.com, Le Chat (FR), and Mistral for clients with EU/regional exposure. The four major engines have distinct citation behaviours: ChatGPT favours authored content + comparison structures; Perplexity weights third-party citation density highly; Gemini privileges schema graph completeness + Wikipedia adjacency; Claude tends to cite long-form authored articles. What score should I aim for?+
Top-decile B2B SaaS leaders score 78–92 on this composite. Mid-market category leaders typically score 58–74. Most brands we audit score 18–34 — which means significant recoverable share. The widget will tell you which fix to ship next based on your specific gap pattern; it is not always the same recommendation. Brands with strong schema but weak third-party citations need different work than brands with strong content but no llms.txt. Targeting "above 70" within 6 months is achievable for most mid-market sites that ship the recommended fixes.
