Ads are contextual text placements rendered at the bottom of ChatGPT's response, clearly labeled "Sponsored" and visually separated from the AI-generated answer. OpenAI matches ads to a user's conversation topic, chat history, and prior ad interactions — a fundamentally different targeting surface from Google Search (keyword-based) or Meta (audience-based).

CPM bidding launched at $60 per thousand impressions; averages have fallen to $25–45 as inventory matured. CPC bidding activated April 2026 at $3–5 per click — mid-range vs Google Search ($1–50+). No minimum spend on the self-serve platform (previously $200K for launch partners, then $50K).
